Dennis Cooper at his bestShocking and graphic... yet quite moving. Interesting style, from prose to drama to letter excerpt. And to make it even more gruesome and frightening, it's based on a real-life story.

The John Fante Reader
Published in Paperback by Ecco (24 December, 2002)
Average review score:

Inside the world of FanteStephen Cooper has done more justice to telling Fante's story than anyone. It is Steve Cooper who has brought Fante's stories back into the limelight again, giving him the voice he so desperately needed (and deserved) when he was alive. The John Fante Reader is a fantastic compilation of stories from all of Fante's work. From beginning to end, the reader is allowed to follow Fante on his journey as a young boy and into adulthood. This is a fabulous read if you have yet to be indoctrinated into the world of Fante as well as if you already love Fante and his out-of-control imagination and storytelling. This Reader puts together little bits and pieces of his best work. I have not laughed as much as I did reading the escapades of Fante's characters, or cry. He is raw and human and so alive in all of his writing. You won't be sorry for having read this. In fact, it will probably prompt you to run out and buy all of his books and read them one by one. It is almost like being teased, only getting to read bits and pieces from each story here. But they are fabulous stories, nonetheless.
I love this book and that stems largely from the fact that I love Fante. You don't have to be Catholic or ITALIAN to appreciate him. A huge thank you to Steve Cooper for putting this out in the world for everyone to enjoy.

Julian of Norwich: Reflections on Selected Texts
Published in Paperback by Hyperion Books (December, 1994)
Average review score:

The Vital Fruits of Contemplation in a Mystic's LifeThis book is a series of short, 5-6 page, selections from the writings of Julian of Norwich and the writer's comments upon them, as to what Julian learned about the Christian life through her contemplation and the living out of her life: God revealing Himself, our desiring God, sharing God's grace with others, journeying towards God, living through difficulties and pain, learning to be compassionate, and continuing on. Each of the 29 chapters starts with a portion of her writing, and then proceeds to expound upon it. The author, Dr. Austin Cooper, lectures and teaches primarily on Christian spirituality and Church history. A very helpful book in explaining the very current relevance of this 14th-century mystic's writings to our attempts to grow in the spiritual life today.

Kaleidoscope: Reading in Education
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (June, 2000)
Average review score:

Kaleidoscope gives you the full spectrumKaliedoscope does the opposing viewpoints journal and essay writing approach very well. The articles are clustered into related fields with well written essays by professionals in the the mix of the issues in education and a few well known voices from the academic researchers to balance it out. The articles all kept me engaged due in part to the volitile nature of of the subjects addressed and the fact that they provoked a strong sense of either agreement of disaproval in either case. This book is a must read for new teachers that are trying to feel out the issues they will be facing in the classrooms and on their school campuses.

Kids in the Kitchen: A Cookbook of Yummy Foods That Kids Can Easily Prepare
Published in Paperback by Athenean Press (TN) (October, 2001)
Average review score:

Grandmother's GiftI grew up with the Betty Crocker children's cookbook. I think this one is better. I appreciate the fact that the recipes are grouped by skills, but doesn't quite "say" that certain recipes are for younger children. Kids can use this book based on the amount of energy they want to put into cooking something, and that's terrific. I bought this for my future grandchildren, and another woman in the office is buying one for herself and the parents of each of her seven grandchildren. Brilliant present, and a smart thing to have in your kitchen, I'd say.
